Google is quietly making one of the most important changes to local search conversion in years: text messaging is now being surfaced as a primary call-to-action (CTA) in category searches on mobile, not just branded searches. And branded searches now feature text messaging prominently in the main CTAs.

In just a small amount of testing after Local SEO expert Joy Hawkins shared her discovery of the addition last week, we are seeing the Text Message option displaying for searches in automotive, real estate, pest control, garage door repair, window cleaning, and other categories.

Historically, the “Text”, “Chat” or “Message” option displayed in Google Business Profiles (GBP) has been through many versions and products, only to end up killed off and removed the solution. Remember Google Business Messages? Then in February of 2025 Google finally went simple and direct by allowing a business to connect any SMS number or Whats App URL to display a Text Message CTA on Google Business Profiles.

The shift is significant. It means texting is no longer a secondary feature—it’s being positioned alongside your options to call, get directions, visit the website, book and other CTAs as a core way customers engage with businesses.

PRO TIP: Enable Text Messaging in your Google Business Profile now before your competitors do so your offering of SMS stands out.

Brand searches on mobile feature text messaging too

When first rolled out, Google only featured the Text Message option in the lower area of a Business Profile in the section with address, hours, phone number, and other options. Now it’s added a Text icon right next to the Call, Directions, and Website options. It’s practically dead center of the screen.

Why This Move Matters (And Why Google Is Doing It)

This isn’t random. It aligns directly with how consumers prefer to communicate today—and how Google measures engagement and conversion.

1. Consumers Prefer Texting

Multiple studies consistently show:

  • Consumers prefer texting over phone calls and email
  • Text messages get read and responded to faster – over 90x faster than email
  • Customers prefer asynchronous communication they can respond to on their own time
  • Calling is increasingly seen as intrusive or inconvenient

Texting fits modern behavior. It’s fast, simple, and low-friction.

2. Google Has Seen Messaging Drive More Leads

Google already has deep insight into messaging performance through:

LSA message lead response time

They know:

  • Messaging increases conversion rates
  • Messaging improves response times
  • They reward better rankings to those that reply faster

This update is Google doubling down on what works.

3. Speed to lead is everything

Google’s goal is simple: connect searchers to businesses as fast as possible.

Texting removes friction:

  • No waiting on hold
  • No voicemail
  • No navigating a website
  • No email spam filter or buried in an inbox

Just tap → message → conversation started.

Why a business texting platform is critical

A business texting platform like Leadferno is becoming a must. You want to centralize text message leads from Google, ads, your website, and direct for maximum efficiency. Using a conversion focused SMS app like Leadferno gives you the tools you need to capture, reply, and win more business.

Speed to lead

Speed to lead is everything in today’s on-demand world, and texting CTAs from Google amplifies that expectation. When a prospect taps “Text message,” they expect an immediate response—definitely not hours or days. Leadferno ensures you never miss that moment with instant auto-replies that engage the lead right away, paired with real-time notifications so your team can jump in fast.

Auto replies and keyword automations can qualify a lead in seconds without lifting a finger

Just as important, it separates these conversations from email inboxes and personal devices, so leads don’t get buried, delayed, or lost. The result is simple: faster first responses, more conversations started, and more opportunities captured.

Power features

Efficiency is what turns conversations into customers. Leadferno equips your team with a full set of business-grade tools designed to make every interaction faster, more consistent, and easier to manage. Instead of typing the same responses repeatedly, your team can use saved message templates, trigger keyword replies, and automations to guide conversations.

Transfers ensure the right team member handles the right lead, while reminders and scheduled messages keep follow-up from slipping through the cracks. All of this is backed by reporting, so you can measure performance, refine your approach, and continuously improve how you convert leads through text.

Secure

Security and control are often overlooked—but they’re critical as texting becomes a primary lead channel. Without a centralized platform, conversations live on individual phones, owned by employees instead of your business. That creates risk: lost data, no visibility, and no control.

Leadferno keeps all conversations, contacts, and history inside a secure, managed system where you control access, permissions, and processes.

Instead of a fragmented, “wild west” approach to texting, you build a structured lead management system that protects your data, supports your team, and scales with your business.

The bigger opportunity: meet customers where they are

This update is part of a broader shift:

Consumers want to text. Google is enabling it. Businesses need to adapt.

If your competitors respond faster, qualify better, and make it easier to move forward via text—you will lose deals, even if you rank higher. You have to be easy to work with.

Enable text messaging in Google Business Profile

Activating the messaging option in your GBP is easy. When logged into Google and accessing your GBP, click on “Edit profile” and then the “Contact” tab. Go to the Chat section and then you can select “Text Messaging” (or WhatsApp) and enter your texting number (your Leadferno inbox number). Hit save and your ready to text with your prospects and customers from your GBP.
